2021 Rate Review

Notice of new electric rates - Effective October 1, 2023

Rate Review Public Hearings July 19 & 20, 2022

Dec. 3, 2021

As a regulated utility, we file a rate review request when the revenue we receive from providing safe and reliable electricity to our customers does not match the expense of producing and delivering that energy, including a reasonable return for shareholders.

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) on Dec. 2 approved our request for interim rates, which will remain in effect as the MPUC considers our full rate request filed on Nov. 1, 2021.

Interim rates will increase by approximately 7% for residential customers and approximately 14% for all other customers, effective Jan. 1, 2022. Under the change, monthly bills for the average residential customer will increase by about $5.89. Interim rates will remain in effect until the MPUC decides on final rates, likely by early 2023.

Final rates are set through a transparent process with the MPUC that regulates investor-owned electric utilities in the state. The 12-18 month process includes opportunities for public input and participation, and multiple public hearings where customers can speak to an administrative law judge overseeing the rate review process. The MPUC also accepts written comments on its website at mn.gov/puc. We also encourage customers to give feedback directly to us by emailing AskUs@mnpower.com.
