Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)

ASHPs are an energy-efficient alternative to traditional furnaces and air conditioners, even in colder climates and for those with moderate cooling needs. They're an attractive option because they are capable of providing efficient cooling and heating. The technology has evolved recently enabling this equipment to perform in cold climates like Minnesota. Specific models classified as Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pumps (ccASHP) can provide effective heating in subzero temperatures.

Benefits of ASHP

  • Increases the efficiency of your existing heating and cooling system and extends its life.
  • Provides energy-efficient heating and air conditioning.
  • Delivers 1.5-3 times more heating energy to a home than the electric energy it consumes.
  • Two setups–ductless or ducted–allow you to choose the best fit for your home.

How does it work?

ASHPs use electricity to transfer energy between indoor and outdoor air. Because they move heat rather than generate heat, these systems typically consume less electricity than electric-resistance heating systems. In cooling mode, heat pumps function like an air conditioner, moving heat from inside to outside the home. In heating mode, the refrigerant flow is reversed to extract low-temperature heat from outdoors and deliver concentrated high-temperature heat to the home.

During the summer:

A heat pump pulls heat from inside your home and moves it outside to provide air conditioning.

During the spring and fall:

A heat pump pulls heat from outside and moves it into your home. You will need a backup heat source when temperatures are below the heat pump's recommended operating temperature.

Two Setups: Ductless or Ducted



Ductless/Mini-split setup

Ductless ASHPs don't require ductwork in your home. There is one outdoor condenser connected to one or more indoor air distribution units. Indoor units are typically mounted on the wall, floor or ceiling. The individually-controlled indoor units allow for zoned heating and cooling to maximize energy savings and comfort.

Choose if:

  • Already heating with radiators, in-floor, or electric baseboard.
  • Getting rid of window A/C units or adding home cooling.

Ducted/Central setup

Ducted ASHPs use existing ductwork to distribute heated and cooled air throughout your home. The outdoor condenser is connected to the indoor furnace's fan. Unlike central A/C units, central ASHPs provide both heating and cooling in a single system.

Choose if:

  • Already heating with forced air (with ductwork in place).
  • Replacing central A/C or adding it for the first time.
